My Trip to Japan, November 2000

Himeji Castle

Himeji Castle is one of the very few castles in Japan which have remained
intact for about 400 years. It has undergone minor restorations but unlike
Nagoya or Osaka castles, the interior is in its original form, with very
steep (and slippery) stairs.

Amanohashidate is a naturally formed land bridge surrounded by mountains
and the Japan Sea. Along with Matsushima near Sendai, and Miyajima near
Hiroshima, it is one of the Three Japan Sceneries (I've now visited all
three). I walked across Amanohashidate which took about 50 minutes.
